Live Action Tangled

Discussion on Race Representation in Live Action Adaptations

Firstly, I don’t want a live action Tangled but there are so many rumors online that I need to get this out.

If there is a live action, I just want the actors to look and feel exactly like the animated ones. By that I mean, I don’t want a race-swapped live action movie. This is coming from me seeing a lot of people advocating for Maitreyi Ramakrishnan to play Raps, and it might sound silly, but it upset me.

Here’s the thing, as a person of color myself, as a SRI LANKAN (the same ethnicity as Maitreyi), I understand the need for diversity in Disney Princess movies, but I hate that Disney is using us for recycled material instead of creating original characters. Maitreyi would be awesome as a desi princess, there’s so much lore and legends and actual South Asian history Disney can use. All they need to do is research desi culture.

Tangled, and the fairytale of Rapunzel, is based on a German girl with blonde hair. No one can argue that her race doesn’t matter, because it so does. It matters like Mulan’s and Pocahontas’ and Moana’s. You can’t race-swap this and get away with it because there’s no logical argumentation for that. It’s not like The Little Mermaid or Cinderella or even Sleeping Beauty where the race does not matter. Raps needs to have blonde hair, she needs to be Caucasian.

Idk I just wanted to get this out. I don’t mind them changing Eugene’s ethnicity, because that isn’t central to the plot. What do you guys think? I can’t possibly be a bigot because I am literally the same race as Maitreyi. Maybe I’m just too emotionally invested in this because Tangled was such a huge part of my identity growing up? Argh.
